Perception of Beauty

By  |

You’re Beautiful! Yes, you. The person who is reading this post at this moment in time is simply beautiful. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, it’s  still flattering to hear it every now and then.

I was encouraged to write this post because of a conversation I overheard on the train. An older lady was talking to her friend discussing how she feels about her beauty. The older black woman went on to tell her friend that she had been married for almost 20 years and said that her husband has never seen her without extensions and never would. She also said that he rarely sees her without a complete face of makeup. Her reasoning behind it was that she did not feel beautiful or attractive without both at all times.

Needless to say, I was both intrigued and shocked. My first question was “how could you share a life with someone and not be comfortable in your own skin?” My next question was “how many years does it take for people to truly feel comfortable in their own skin?” That’s when I realized it’s a life-long journey to truly love who you are both inside and out. As a 21-year-old brown skin, natural hair-rocking girl, it has definitely been a journey for me to accept my beauty. One of the main reasons is because the media, publications and any other major source doesn’t encourage or display an array of beauty, especially with dealing with black women.

So, once again I say you’re beautiful. It doesn’t matter if you’re 9 or 79. Appreciate your own unique beauty. From your bone structure to your body type, love every inch of you everyday. If someone objects to it, it’s time to snip them out of your life and keep it moving.

Get it, gorgeous!

Miracles & Blessings,
