IHS Mixed Chicks 2

On Wednesday, November 12, 2014 Walmart, in partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Mixed Chicks, hosted a grooming suite to give Thurgood Marshall College Fund students an opportunity to receive complimentary hair styles and cuts while getting up close & personal with the beauties behind the Mixed Chicks brand. In between interviews and professional sessions, young women and men flocked to the Grooming Suite to learn more about the Mixed Chicks product offerings and proper usage directly from the brand’s founders, Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge.

With a captive and inquisitive audience of Thurgood Marshall College Fund students, I had an opportunity to bring my blog’s “Fly Female Entrepreneur” interview series to life with the founders of Mixed Chicks. I sat down with the two passionate business women for an interactive and candid discussion about the many blessings and challenges of being the captains of their own ship.

Wendi and Kim candidly shared the story of how they launched their brand. These ladies both worked a full time job and would pack and ship their products at home nights and weekends, and then deliver them to stores in a U-Haul truck themselves. The lesson? Obstacles are a part of the growing process when you’re building a brand. It’s OK to try your dream and make mistakes, but it’s NOT okay to never try.
