A MJ Kind of Day…

By  |

As L.A. braces for the highly anticipated Michael Jackson memorial and the world tunes in and logs on, I’ve come to the conclusion that although I’ve tried, I can’t really go through this historic day without acknowledging the King of Pop. This fellow Virgo (yes, we share the same birthday) had talent that transcends cultural boundaries and his memorial is poised to be a global Internet video-viewing event that eclipses even the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Never a fan of “goodbyes,” I suggest we simply say “until later” to the Michael Jackson we all know and love. His spirit and legacy will live on for years and years to come through his music, influence on pop culture, and of course, fashion.

Television networks across the dial are airing live coverage of the Michael Jackson memorial, to be held today starting at 10AM PT at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Here’s a rundown of where to watch the memorial service, according to Variety:

ABC: Live coverage with Charles Gibson, beginning at 10AM PT (1PM ET).

CBS: The network plans to broadcast a number of shows from the Staples Center, including another segment of ‘The Early Show’ (7AM ET), as well as two special editions of the ‘CBS Evening News With Katie Couric,’ starting tonight at 6:30PM PT/ET. Couric will also host ’48 Hours,’ airing Tuesday night at 10PM PT/ET.

CNN: Live coverage with Anderson Cooper, Larry King and Don Lemon, beginning at 10AM PT (1PM ET). Additional coverage can be seen on HLN, CNN Intl. and CNN en Espanol.

E!: Live coverage, beginning at 10AM PT (1PM ET).

Fox: Fox News will kick off its coverage with Shepard Smith at 9AM PT (12PM ET), featuring on-the-scene reporting from Greta Van Susteren. Van Susteren will then host “On the Record” from LA at 10PM PT/ET.

MSNBC: Live coverage with Chris Jansing, beginning at 10AM PT (1PM ET).

NBC: Live coverage with Brian Williams, beginning at 10AM PT (1PM ET).

TV Guide: Live coverage, beginning at 10AM PT (1PM ET).

The memorial will also be streaming live at Staplescenter.com.

It’s almost impossible to avoid getting wrapped up in the media’s coverage (and sensationalism) of this tragic loss, but let’s remember to keep the Jackson family in our thoughts and prayers. As Janet sincerely stated at last week’s BET Awards, “To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family.”  Let’s respect that.

Rest peacefully, Michael!
