The Start-Up of You
I stumbled upon a very informative piece in the New York Times today that I just had to share. This timely story explores the reality of today’s job market and the fact that while a 9-5 seems to be the “safe” option for some, it’s not always the most secure. With this in mind, LinkedIn founder Reid Garrett Hoffman and co-author Ben Casnocha have a new book slated to hit shelves early 2012 titled “The Start-Up of You.” According to Hoffman:
The old paradigm of climb up a stable career ladder is dead and gone. No career is a sure thing anymore. Therefore you should approach career strategy the same way an entrepreneur approaches starting a business.
Sounds brilliant to me! He went on to state that entrepreneurs don’t write a 100-page business plan and execute it one page at a time. We’re constantly experimenting and adapting. I firmly believe that in order to succeed, you HAVE to be the queen (or king) of reinvention! If you remain stuck on what you thought your business would be instead of being open to changes in your industry and new consumer demands, you’ll never grow.
