Say what you will about Erykah Badu’s new video for “Window Seat,” but in my book this lady is FEARLESS! How many women do you know who would take it all off in the name of artistic and political expression? Many people don’t understand the messages behind the nudity but like many forms of art, it’s just not for everyone.

The “Window Seat” video, which was shot guerrilla style sans permit, reminded the world that Erykah is fearless, beautiful, and committed to making us think! She’s ballsy, she’s taking it there, and in my opinion, she’s everything an artist should be both mentally and creatively. She’s going against the grain and trading in her superficial layers for vulnerability. She’s exposing her true self.

Over the years we’ve watched Erykah’s world evolve right before our eyes. While much of her personal/love life has been criticized by the media and her fans, she continues to move forward unapologetically with the type of confidence many of us can only wish for! Whether she’s calling Tyrone or encouraging you not to become a Bag Lady, Badu challenges listeners with highly personal, emotional, philosophical, and political content.

No matter your career path, there’s a lesson to be learned from the book of Baduism. You could be a music artist, a lawyer, a clothing designer or an educator. There may be millions of other people in your profession but only you can do it like you! Find your own lane in life and own it. Don’t be afraid to express yourself, do things differently, and leave your mark in the world by living boldly and fearlessly!

“They who play it safe, are quick to assassinate what they don’t understand,” she speaks, off camera. “They move in packs, ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another. They feel more comfortable in groups, less guilt to swallow. They are us. This is what we have become, afraid to respect the individual.”

-Erykah Badu

“Window Seat” was shot by Creative Control, which is comprised of the amazingly talented duo, Coodie and Chike. The song is the first single off Badu’s latest release, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh, which is currently available on iTunes.

As a New York City storyteller, filmmaker, digital content creator, and PR strategist, Renae Bluitt created "In Her Shoes" to empower and enlighten women committed to realizing their dreams.
