Gyrl Wonder Inspires Youth to Shine When the World May Want to Dim Their Light

By  |

From multi-pronged, national initiatives like Black Girls Rock, to the fact that we’re launching businesses in record-breaking numbers, #blackgirlmagic is alive and well. It hasn’t always been this way, though. We’ve come a long way in terms of embracing our power and being unapologetic about the magical impact we have on the world. What if this confidence was instilled in us at an earlier age? Imagine being 16 and just as focused community outreach and goal-getting as you were on fashion and meeting cute boys. Enter Tola Lawal, the beauty behind Gyrl Wonder.

Tola launched the Gyrl Wonder platform as an outlet for girls to hone in on their goals, dreams, and living a purposeful life. Through intimate conversations with professionals and constant reminders of the power of self-love, Gyrl Wonder equips our youth with the tools they’ll need to shine in a world that may want to dim their light.

Gyrl Wonder acts as a catalyst, giving rising to ambitious girls between the ages of 13-18. The organization provides and cultivates resources while teaching our girls how to leverage those tools to facilitate their personal and professional goals. The program targets forward thinking young women seeking to identify and explore their purpose through mentorship and objective alignment.

“It is necessary for young women to understand the context of the world we live in, and the communities they belong to in order to be successful. They will continue to be told by the world that they live in that they are inadequate, relegated to certain roles and not suited to be leaders, ” said Gyrl Wonder founder, Tola Lawal. “With knowledge of self, understanding of their worth, and opportunities to give back, young women will have the tools necessary to withstand the naysayers and to contribute on their own terms. Gyrl Wonder is my contribution to combat the societal constructs that limit that our young women.”
