The McBride Sisters Spark Change in the Wine Industry with the SHE CAN Professional Development Fund

When is the last time you gathered with your girls and there wasn’t a bottle of wine on the table? I’ll wait. Research shows that 60 percent of wine consumers are women, and as a result, we are a driving force in the industry’s success. To put this in perspective, the total U.S. wine market grew to more than $70 billion in total value and 408 million cases in total volume were sold in 2018.

Despite this fact, the wine industry suffers from the same gender disparities as most others. Although women comprise more than half the population and consume more wine than our male counterparts ever will, women hold far fewer positions in the wine industry, fewer leadership roles, and even fewer ownership roles. Karen MacNeil’s Second Annual Report on Women in the Wine Industry reveals that “an estimated 10 percent of winemakers in California are female, compared to 7 percent in Washington, and 5 percent in New York.”

Enter the McBride Sisters. As the first African-American sister duo to found and establish a wine company, Andrea and Robin McBride are disrupting the male-dominated wine industry with their efforts to support more women entering the field through their SHE CAN Professional Development Fund. With this fund, the McBride Sisters will empower women to shift the narrative and secure their seat at the table, or even follow Andrea and Robin’s lead by creating their own! Applications for the SHE CAN scholarship will be accepted through the end of July 2019. If you, or a woman you know, is interested in pursuing a career in the wine industry, click here to apply.

Oh and while you’re at it ladies, pick up the newest member of the McBride Sisters Collection, the SHE CAN Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé in a can for your next summer outing!

About McBride Sisters Wine Collection

The McBride Sisters Wine Collection is a story of two sisters and their passion for wine. Robin and Andréa were raised separately in the wine regions of Monterey, California and Marlborough, New Zealand. Living across the world from one another, Robin and Andréa were unaware of the other for nearly half their lives. The Sisters eventually found their way to each other in 1999 when they quickly discovered their shared passion for wine and viticulture. In 2017, Robin and Andréa released the McBride Sisters Wine Collection to unite their parallel lives and passion.

As a New York City storyteller, filmmaker, digital content creator, and PR strategist, Renae Bluitt created "In Her Shoes" to empower and enlighten women committed to realizing their dreams.
