Are you over the media using negativity to consistently cast black men as society’s weakest link? Were you offended like I was by the shirtless, “thugged out” version of Tiger Woods that ungraced the cover of February’s Vanity Fair? Sure, I understand that gloom and doom sells but there’s always a deeper truth beyond the headlines. A truth that we’ll never understand if we rely solely on the media’s statistics to tell us what men in the Black community are made of. Although I’m not the biggest fan of numbers (I’m more of a creative, right brain type of gal), I understand that statistics don’t lie. However, we must keep in mind that while they may help to quantify, statistics can’t give balance or provide a larger context to the story.

Speaking of stories, have you heard the story of Myron Rolle? If your response is no, don’t feel bad. Up until last week, I hadn’t a clue who he was either but thanks to a dear friend, I’m now in the know and obligated to share with my readers. Myron Rolle is…

  • An All-American safety
  • Can play the saxaphone and sing
  • Was the lead in his high school’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof”
  • Graduated from Florida State as an exercise science major in less than three years with a 3.75 GPA
  • Says “please” and “thank you”
  • Researches stem cells
  • Starts anti-obesity programs that the U.S. Department of Interior adopts, aimed at helping Native American children make smart choices about fitness and health
  • Was named a finalist for a Rhodes scholarship, the most prestigious academic award given, during his 2008 football season
  • Once selected to be a Rhodes Scholar, announced that he was skipping his senior season to attend the prestigious University of Oxford

So as you can see ladies, this Myron Rolle guy is truly some kind of special. At the ripe age of 23, this chocolate-covered cutie patootie has single-handedly defied every Black male stereotype known to man. I look forward to hearing more about this amazing talent’s journey in the media and much less about Lil’ Wayne’s jail sentence being delayed due to dental surgery. Thanks for being so very awesome, Myron. I am truly inspired!
