Follicle the Film

By  |

Why are people of color so misrepresented in the media and what makes the current natural hair movement significant? In his film, “Follicle”, Documentary Filmmaker Rhadamés Julián will explore these issues by taking the viewer on an organic first person quest throughout several countries, talking to scholars, performers, and everyday people about how these issues affect our society and how we can make a positive change around the world.

Julián’s goal as Director  is to define the natural hair movement as more than just a trend or beautiful hair. “There are masses of us that are deciding to go natural all at the same time, there’s a little more to it,” states Karen Tappin Saunderson of Brooklyn-based natural cosmetics brand, Karen’s Body Beautiful.

As one of the film’s producers, Ouidad’s Adama Sesay shared:

“This is a message that I have become passionate about because of my experience in the beauty industry. As someone that never wore her hair in it’s natural state prior to working for Ouidad, I have been inspired by her mission of empowering women to embrace and love what they have naturally. Growing up this is something that I have never really experienced, especially from other people of color. I really envision a world where humans can accept who they are and don’t have to live up to false or unrealistic ideals. And I really think this film could change our industry for the better.”

If you’re in the New York City area and have time in your schedule this evening, join the Follicle team as they celebrate the end of their Indiegogo crowd sourcing campaign. Meet actress Kim Coles, Karen’s Body Beautiful founder, Karen Tappin Saunderson, Mane Man founder, Jor-El, and Natural Selection founder, Cassidy Blackwell. The first 200 guests will receive gift bags filled with goodies from Karen’s Body Beautiful, Ouidad, Shea Moisture and UR CUP. All proceeds from ticket sales will be going towards the production of this film.
