Somi + Sony = Musical Bliss

By  |

What happens when a young girl you grew up with in the Midwest evolves into a beautiful woman with talent beyond belief? You celebrate! Somi, one of my sisters from another mister, is enjoying a magical week as one of the newest artists to join the Sony Music family. After years of making it happen both stateside and abroad as an independent artist, Somi has been blessed with a partner to help expose her work to the masses.

The internationally acclaimed soul-jazz vocalist and songwriter, Somi is now signed to Sony Music’s historic jazz imprint, Okeh Records, making her the first East African artist to join the major label’s roster. Somi’s first project with the major label will be titled The Lagos Music Salon – a carefully curated collection of story-based songs inspired by her recent visit to Nigeria.

Slated for release in early 2014, Somi’s new album will serve as the follow up to her critically-acclaimed masterpiece, If the Rain Comes First which featured her music mentor, Hugh Masekela. As one of the global songbird’s greatest works, the album landed at #2 on the Billboard World Music charts and made the Top 20 Soul/R&B albums on Amazon.com.

If you’re not familiar with Somi’s talent, take a peek at her beautiful video for Prayer to the Saint of the Broken Hearted:

Here’s to continued success and blessings on your musical journey, Somi. Continue to make us proud!
