New York City creative entrepreneur Kirsten Magwood is wrapping up the year on a high note with the launch of “A$$ential Art,” a traveling and evolving exhibition that explores race, class, and gender. Proceeds from the sale of pieces in this show will support “Assets: Exploring the Bottom Line” which addresses these themes through a historical look at the rise of the ass in popular culture. The film and the art not only shed light on misinformation and dated thinking, but also aim to inspire women to embrace their curves.

To kick off the project, Kirsten will be presenting the work of several talented artists during this year’s Art Basel in Miami with Callipygous Complex:

CALLIPYGOUS, a Latin word derived from the Greek kallipygos, meaning: of, pertaining to, or having finely developed and beautiful buttocks.

Throughout history the continent of Africa, exploited of it’s natural resources, has been a mainstay in developing countries and empirical strategy. None more-so than of it’s people and the laborious usage of their being (body) to enhance another’s gain. From the 19th Century European “Hottentot Venus” exhibition to slavery, the body of the African has been sought, valued and commerced. The African woman, while publicly shunned, continues to chart the course of beauty throughout all cultures in the world.

Through a looking glass, “Callipygous Complex” will explore how the posterior and the figurative Hottentot Venus continues to amaze, intrigue, inspire & enrage all cultures throughout the world. From surgical, to beauty, fashion and celebrity; the “Hottentot Venus” machine continue to exploit and vilify. The exhibition will explore the race, class, and gender through this love/hate relationship with a distinct derriere.

As the producer of a cutting-edge cultural platform that is multidisciplinary in scope, Prizm’s mission is to promote the work of artists from Africa and the African Diaspora who reflect global trends in contemporary art.
