9 Steps to Pursuing Your Dream Career in 2012

By  |

It’s that time of year again, ladies. The holidays are in full swing and 2012 is creeping up ever so rapidly. As we look back on all of our accomplishments and shortcomings of 2011, it’s only natural for us to start visualizing how 2012 can be bigger and better. I mean, life IS all about forward movement and growth, right? With work and career taking up so much of our time, it’s important that we absolutely love what we do…not think it’s “OK” or just collect a check. You’ve got to LOVE it and find fulfillment in your work, even when you’re so busy you don’t know if you’re coming or going.

I stumbled upon an excellent piece on fastcompany.com that spells out 9 steps to quitting your “have to have” job and pursuing your dream career. The post addresses some of the many reasons we find ourselves “stuck” in a job (i.e., not taking the time to identify our passion, fear of the unknown and financial concerns) and maps out 9 concrete steps to take before making the big move:

1. Make time for your passion

2. Expand your network outside your company

3. Get your financial house in order

4. Seek support — both emotional and financial

5. Don’t worry about what others will think

6. Plan ahead

7. Forget the golden handcuffs and the money left on the table

8. Get the timing right

9. Stay motivated!
